The Watermelon In The Compost Pile

Yippee! There’s a volunteer watermelon growing in the compost pile! The fruit is round, it’s big and green and gorgeous.

There’s a family party at my house today on Labor Day and Bill and I can’t wait to show the melon to our large family. We’ve been talking to each other about this lucky melon for days. Won’t people be surprised and envious?!

The family includes my Great Aunt Ruby and three of my 3rd cousins who I don’t know well. We’ll show them how great country living can be! Melons growing like gold in the garbage dump out back!

In fact, everyone will be impressed when we drag all 30 people out to see our prize. And then…and then, we will pick it... and bring it around to the front of the house. Then, with Ceremony we will cut it up and all of us will eat watermelon for Labor Day!

Here’s what really happens:

An ‘Ordinary’ Winery?

This Winery is a small leap from my house, right around a bend in the Oak tree lined road. It looks like any day at any Winery, doesn’t it?

But, maybe not.

It’s an Italian Winery, and the man and wife who own it, both in their 80’s, make fresh pizza for us in their out door brick oven.

When we come here we eat crisp pizza dripping with cheese and drink bottles of wine. Italian men play instruments on the patio and sing Italian opera for us while we overlook the grape vineyards and the great rock and grass strewn valley below.

Today, I’m here with my daughter, her husband and my 6 year old grandson and 10 year old granddaughter.

I’ve been here, before but my god, something has changed.

Look at the photo, again. Do you see anything unusual about it? No? Well. Let me show you a few things.

Venus With A Classic Old Jaguar

Today, I will be driving a new souped up Jaguar car, and will do 0-62 MPH in 5.4 seconds.

But first, we have to find the track.

My friend Carol is my navigator, but it turns out she and I are on par with our navigational skills. This means, “not good at all.”

We get utterly lost at our meet up point in San Diego and we get utterly lost when we finally get to Irvine, California. We cannot find the amphitheater.

We go around and around on the freeways. We stop at a golf course and ask golfers, “Where are we ?” and “Where is the amphitheater?”

The golfers look at us, then they look at the sky. Each one says different things and point their fingers in different directions.

We slide my car to the side of roads, pause, and ask workers in orange vests and hard hats for directions. They shrug their shoulders.

My iPhone, in a strident voice, insists that I go backwards but at least I know that’s not right.

Wringing wet with sweat and amped up, we finally swing into the correct, vast parking lot. We’re late. (more…)
