An ‘Ordinary’ Winery?

This Winery is a small leap from my house, right around a bend in the Oak tree lined road. It looks like any day at any Winery, doesn’t it?

But, maybe not.

It’s an Italian Winery, and the man and wife who own it, both in their 80′s, make fresh pizza for us in their out door brick oven.

When we come here we eat crisp pizza dripping with cheese and drink bottles of wine. Italian men play instruments on the patio and sing Italian opera for us while we overlook the grape vineyards and the great rock and grass strewn valley below.

Today, I’m here with my daughter, her husband and my 6 year old grandson and 10 year old granddaughter.

I’ve been here, before but my god, something has changed.

Look at the photo, again. Do you see anything unusual about it? No? Well. Let me show you a few things.

Whoops! Another Good Doctor!

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

Sometimes It Would Have Been Better To Have Stayed Home For The Day

A phone call comes from a friend of mine and she is screaming with laughter. She has just read my blog from last week, recounting the mighty gas display by my Good Doctor.

‘Sylvia’ feels compelled to tell me about her husband Dr.’Pete’, the chiropractor, and his  profound  experience.

He likes to dress casually when he works, she says. A sport shirt and a nice pair of pants will do the job.

One day he is busy adjusting a 400 lb lady. He bends over her as the big woman lies face down on the adjusting table. Because of her size, he has to labor to put his full weight into the adjusting maneuver. The mighty stress of the effort suddenly and most unexpectedly, rips his pants wide open from his back waistband right down through his butt cheeks to the crotch of his pants.

“Not to worry,” Dr. Pete later tells his wife, “my  patient didn’t hear the ripping tear  because at the same moment she was ripping herself, as she let out a gigantic fart!”

“But, feeling a need to work more freely, Pete had decided not to wear any underpants that day,” Sylvia tells me. “And as he said, ‘Because of that small lapse, while working with patients and nurses I had to keep my back to the walls of the clinic for the rest of the day. One of the hardest parts was that patients often bring family members into the treatment room and they sit wherever they please! What a day!”

The moral may be that, while it is not easy being a patient, we should all have some patience and understanding, as it is not always easy being a doctor.

Old Ladies Sex Lives

Lexi’s Hairdresser Shirley, Both Daydreaming Perhaps?

Shirley is in her 80′s and I have known her for awhile. Today, I’ve taken Lexi to her shop to get a haircut.

‘How are you and the new boyfriend?’ I ask.

I’m remembering when I last saw her, maybe 6 months ago, when she was rhapsodizing over a man she had met on the golf course.

‘Oh, he’s gone!” she says, with a hint of distain.

“I have a new one.’

The former man, she says, was cheap. He made her pay for her own meals and everything else.

“I wasn’t brought up to be that way with a man.”

I’m trying not to gasp but the air gets stuck in my throat. I choke a bit.

Shirley is widowed and has had a number of boyfriends since I have known her in the past year or two.

“This boyfriend,” Shirley is saying, ” has a beautiful 40 ft motor home, lives in alaska part time, and adores me.”

As she washes the suds out of Lexi’s hair, she looks at me and says, “I’m retiring! I’m closing the shop and traveling with this lovely man and my little dog!”

I’m impressed. I haven’t had a boyfriend for years and Shirley, in her 80′s, with all the massive single female competition, always has one.

My Mother also had boyfriends into her very late 80′s. Actually, right up until the time she died.

There was Hoover, a handsome guy my age, a Basque man who lived on a ranch. In her 80′s, he adored my mother and thought her the most beautiful and sexy woman in existence. (more…)

The Great Cat Potty

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Before The Cat Potty

This is my back patio where I first have my Brilliant Idea. Notice the cat door.

The Great Cat Potty Begins To Take Shape

This all started when I tried to train my cat Sparkle to use the toilet.

Sparkle Asking To Eat Or Go Outside.. Or Both

This Is Sparkle Telling Me She’d Like To Go Outside, Please

After 2 1/2 months I succeeded in teaching her not to use a cat box OR a toilet and now she will only go outside. This means at night. Often multiple times a night. You can imagine how this is affecting my rest and peace of mind because of all the dangers that lurk in the dark for cats.

And this, of course, is Karl.

Karl In Repose

He too chooses to only go to the bathroom outside. Fortunately, I had a large cat yard built for him, but again, I am up much of the night putting him in and out of it.

This Is Just Part Of Karl’s Yard!

Sparkle will not go in this yard. She hates it. She is used to her freedom.

I do not have a photo of Jeronamo and Bill laughing madly and slapping each other as Jeronamo builds The Great Cat Potty. They are already hysterical about the big covered yard I had Jeronamo build for Karl. And they are hysterical about this back patio that I had fenced in so Karl can not get out. The coyotes can get in, of course, as they jump fences. So at night, Karl and Sparkle will need to use the New Very Improved And Brilliant Cat Potty.

Bill says my back patio now looks like Guantanamo.

This Is Karl At Guantanamo

And here is the finished Great Cat Potty!

Maybe The Cats And I Will Get Some Sleep Tonight

Bill and Jeronamo are still slapping and laughing.

Different Hair Disasters

The First Hair Disaster But Probably Not The Last

Lexi stuck one  of her little brother’s big toy gizmos in her long hair and it won’t come out. She doesn’t know why she did it, but then, when it comes to hair, we women often wonder why we did it.

The night before my sister Polly’s son got married, she had a friend put a color rinse on her white hair. Her hair turned the color of an apricot and it wouldn’t come out. All the wedding photos feature Polly looking like a bowl of ripe fruit. These family photos are ‘forever.’

When Polly was 40, with the same white hair, she asked her husband to give her a perm. You probably know how that worked out?

I hadn’t been warned about this and when I saw her the next day I almost fell down the steps at our mother’s house. Polly had an Old Lady Poodle Perm. She was a shocking site as The Look had aged her 30-35 years! We had a preview of her Old Ladyhood. I laughed so hard my guts hurt for days.

But, let’s be fair and tell you about my hair mishaps. They started with I was 15.

One evening I came to the dinner table with my hair dyed red. My father yelled and slammed his fist onto our conference sized dinner table.

“Margaret!” he yelled at my mother. “She looks like a godamn slut!”

How was I to know his mother had dyed her hair red when it ‘wasn’t done’ and had some other ‘slutty’ adventures?

My mother immediately took me out to the wash room, dumped my head in a concrete sink and washed my hair vigorously with Tide detergent. A number of times. It didn’t remove the red  but I did have hair like dried hay until it finally grew out.

After that experience, you couldn’t stop me. I bleached my hair blonde and it went green.

I dyed it red, again. And then a dark plum purple color when purple hadn’t been invented yet.

Easter egg dye was good but that shocking pink color took months to work itself out.

My father raged.

When I went off to college I went into a positively dying frenzy.

One terrible morning I had just dyed my hair and was washing it in the bathroom sink. Suddenly, I felt my hair blow up in my hands. I slowly raised my head and looked in the mirror. Yikes. I was Bozo the Clown, I was Daffy Duck, I was a Monster. My entire head of hair had exploded and expanded. There was only one thing to do. I cut it all off and called it a Pixie Cut, but you need more hair then fuzz for a Pixie Cut.

Walking to my college classes the next day, there were 2 fellows trailing behind me. I was wearing a red and white polka dot culotte outfit that I had sewn. I was feeling pretty cute about my sexy little self when I heard one of the boys say about me, “Wow. That’s really cute. But…what is it?”

What is the definition of dumb?

I kept dying my hair.

When I was in my early 40′s and had the sexiest, handsomest boy friend in town, I had a new fellow at the local hair salon cut and dye my hair. When the deed was done and I was unveiled, the entire Salon went silent.

My hair was dog shit brown and the short hair cut made me look like a long green onion. The word ‘ugly’ is too mild.

I slunk home, sat on the stairs and waited for my handsome boyfriend to show up. When ‘R’ opened the door, looked up and saw me sitting on the stairs, he fell against the wall. In 2 seconds he had me out in the kitchen with my hair in the sink while he scrubbed my hair with dish soap. Deja vu. And, it didn’t work.

When my daughter Summer, was in her early teens and most embarrassed by her mother, I decided to quit dying and cutting. I decided to grow my hair out.

As the hair grew out it was layered in bands of dyed brown, red, yellow and natural white.

While driving my 280 Z, I’d leave all the car windows open because we lived at the mild coast. My hair would blow all over my head, back and forth, up in the air, out the windows and into my face. It was a fresh, free feeling.

However, one time Summer was in the backseat while I was driving with my hair blowing. She suddenly shouted, ‘Mother! How can you let yourself look like that!’

Don’t know. It didn’t bother me.

But, then of course, I dyed my hair, again.

Looking back, I had beautiful, natural hair. It was light brown with copper highlights.

In my 30′s my hair started to go ‘platinum’ but of course, I felt I couldn’t have that. I was too young.

I continued to fiddle with my hair and once a stylist even made me look like a dark brown tarantula.

But now, things have changed.

As an apology to my hair, I never touch it. I leave it totally to it’s own devices. It’s ‘platinum’ and it’s long. It does whatever it wants to do.

However, oddly enough, I’m swamped with compliments. People, (mainly older women) gasp and clutch their throats when they see me. They rave about my ‘gorgeous, fabulous, incredible hair’!

Men don’t say much of anything. They just think my hair is ‘platinum.’

I’m thinking of all those years I could have had my own, gorgeous hair but I constantly pestered it, instead.

What was wrong with me? What is wrong with us? Why can’t we leave our lovely selves alone?

A Jaunty Lesson About Sex

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

Venus Unaware

My daughter, the kids and I go to a Renaissance Faire.

Here’s a highlight.

Summer takes my photo with this Jolly Renaissance Man. Look at it carefully.

My 9 year old granddaughter is looking carefully.

“What’s that?” she asks.

She’s pointing to something I haven’t noticed.

Do you see it?

It’s the man’s jaunty, satin cod piece. That big thing that points up to the big, blue sky.

How would you explain what it is and how and why?

Be prepared with all answers to all possible birds and bee questions that your kids may ask. Even going back to the 15th and 16th centuries. And, if you don’t know what a cod piece is….*I have the information for you. Some day you may need it.

Sex education can never start too early.

*codpiece |?käd?p?s|nouna pouch, esp. a conspicuous and decorative one, attached to a man’s breeches or close-fitting hose to cover the genitals, worn in the 15th and 16th centuries.ORIGIN from earlier cod ‘scrotum’ (from Old English codd‘bag, pod’) + piece.

Venus Has An Exciting Moment At The Car Wash

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

Venus On Her Exciting Day

Summer lives at the coast where everyone is very hip and chicky fine, you know.

Because I’m going there to see my daughter today, I’m wearing a colorful dress with lots of sparkles and design and I even put on my orange shoes.

On my way down the mountain I stop at the car wash. I like to stop at this one because the middle eastern men do the best car washing job.

While my car is being washed and hand dried I sit outside on a blue iron bench and casually watch the men at work.

Eventually, a good looking guy, maybe in his 30′s, lifts his arm and calls out, “Jaguar! Jaguar!”

That’s me.

As I’m handing him my receipt he says, “You have very, very, very, very, beautiful…” (more…)

My Enema Adventure

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

“If I Were A Dragon Fly..I Would Bite These People..And Go Home!”

Will this New Adventure be as messy as my Enema Adventure or The Emergency Hospital Adventure In Palm Springs?

As you’re reading this, I am having another Adventure. This time I’m in Napa with grammar school friends, (hopefully) enjoying a Wine Drinking Vacation.

After last year’s incident my 6 women friends strictly warned me that I must promise I would do nothing odd or eccentric, ever again, 2 months before our yearly trip together. They know how I am.

Too bad they missed out on my Enema Vacation.  (more…)

Where The Men Are

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

“They’re Not Where Carole And I Went”

My friend Carole and I go to brunch at a classy, rich golf resort down the mountain.

We sit on the up scale patio next to the golf course. There’s a vast green view filled with grass, oak trees, designer clouds in the sky and old men trying to put balls into little holes.

The table beside us has grandparents and four tiny children. The kids keep shrieking and knocking on the back of my chair and sometimes they step on my toes as they race around the tables. One little girl says to me, “Why do you have gray hair?”

“It’s platinum,” I say. “I have it because I’m lucky.”

Carole and I are pretty much OK with the childish revelry because we have grandkids and we know how they are.

However….Carole has been single for centuries and so have I. We think it would be fun to talk to a nice, eligible man once in awhile.

I had suggested we go where all the men go on a Sunday morning; to a fancy restaurant on an expensive golf course.

That idea isn’t working out too well. Especially since I have a stomach ache and can’t eat very much.

Carole and I are disappointed today but we  have been for years. We often go to luxury places and the men we have managed to meet have been disappointments. Like, they wear little tassels on their shoes and don’t exhibit any animal magnetism. Or, they are looking at these same places for rich women to take care of them, or to take advantage of women in some other ways.

A week or so later I stop at my brother Jim’s new place. He has moved his mobile kitchen, The 3rd St Grill, next to an old  country convenience store right up the street from me. (more…)
